A word about chair rail

After our latest adventure of putting chair rail in in the baby's room I have had lots of people asking about the process and if it's difficult or not to put up. Let me just say that's is way harder than it looks. You would think it's just as easy as gluing a piece of straight wood to a flat wall, not at all. First, you buy the chair rail, which comes in 12 foot long pieces, so you have to have a big vehicle to get them home. Then you have to have some one who got an A+ in Geometry to figure out how to cut the angles for the corners, and you have to have a miter saw to cut it. There was one angle in the room that required an entire page of geometry equations to figure out how to cut it. (Pictures below) If you have a room that only has 90 degree angles that it's not that difficult. So once you figure out the angles you have to attach it to that wall, the guy at Home Depot said to just nail it to the wall with a nail gun.....if you want it to look super white trash than you should defiantly nail it to the wall so you can see all the nails. We did that with one piece and immediately ripped it off the wall and went back and bought liquid nails. If you nail it, you can see the gaps in between the nails where it's not flush with the wall, it looks awful, and you can see all the nails. So you put on the glue and put it up, but it's not going to stay stuck to the wall, so you have to go along and hold pieces of it to the wall until it's dry enough to stay. Then you have to go back with the glue and fill in the gaps in the top so it looks sealed to the wall. Then you have to go in with wood filler and fill in all the seams and corners. After all that is done and it's stuck to the wall, you have to tape it off and paint it the color you want. It's just a long process. But I think it looks cute.
